Nervous System Regulation for the New Year

Nervous System Regulation for the New Year

It’s no secret that the holiday season can take a major toll on our nervous system. Everybody celebrates differently but most of us likely feel stressed, tired, run down, sick, or all of the above. Typically, the holidays are also a time where we indulge, or overindulge in sweets and alcohol.

It is important to do all that we can to protect our energy and support our bodies throughout this season, because stress of all kinds can negatively affect our hormone health and immune system.

Let’s talk about 5 ways to regulate your nervous system, so you can stay grounded and healthy going into the New Year.
1) Self Compassion.
First, and most importantly, you need to be gentle with yourself. No matter who you are, the holidays will bring up one sort of stressor or another. This is okay, and there is no reason to beat yourself up over it. Give yourself a hug, have a warm mug of Moon Milk, take a hot shower and know that you will be okay!
2) Yin Yoga.
Yin Yoga is a slow paced yoga practice that is perfect for the winter. Poses are low to the ground and are held for long periods of time (usually 3-5 minutes). These poses work deep into the fascia which can release tension and calm the nervous system.
3) Breathwork.
There are many different types of breathwork, or “pranayama”, to explore. We suggest searching youtube and experimenting with different kinds until you find one that works for you. Breathwork can relieve stress, release emotions and calm the mind.
4) Rest.
This time of the year can involve traveling, driving long distances, sleeping away from home, extra cooking and other activities that can wear us down. Make sure to carve out time each day to listen to your body and give it the rest it needs.
5) Cold Showers.
If we are somewhere cold for the winter, this is probably a chilling idea. However, there is research to support that cold exposure, even for 30 seconds, can regulate the nervous system, improve our moods and help us become more resilient.
If all else fails, make a gratitude list to recognize the positives and know that seasons are always cycling, and this one will be over soon!
